Course Overview
This presentation will begin by reviewing the enteric nervous system, which highlights the gut as the second brain. Next, Dr. Eckel will discuss the importance of the gut microbiome since it has tremendous effect on brain function, specifically with regard to Parkinson’s Disease. He will outline the early signs and possible causes of brain dysfunction, including the Braak Hypothesis. He will also discuss the role that the vagus nerve may play in disease progression and conditions associated with vagus nerve dysfunction. Lastly, he will address how to support Parkinson’s patients using a comprehensive nutritional approach as well as address how to best support the microbiome to obtain optimal brain health.
