Webinar Description
This webinar presentation "Thyroid Disorders and Management" will cover common thyroid disorders with a brief discussion of etiology, prevalence, presentation, diagnosis, and prognosis.  A following discussion will address clinical management of common thyroid disorders with a focus on pharmaceutical interventions, particularly thyroid hormone replacement alternatives and antithyroid drugs. A discussion of the pharmceutical treatments for thyroid disorders will include specific scientific names of therapeutic agents, their chemical structures, modes of action, comparative advantages and side effects, indications and contraindications, and interactions with other medications, herbs, and foods. Natural therapeutic alternatives will also be discussed.

Goals and Objectives
  1. Understand the basic pathophysiology of common thyroid disorders
  2. Understand the difference in composition and action of synthetic versus natural thyroid prescription
  3. Know the countraindications and cautions in the use of thyroid hormone replacement
  4. Understand how to medically manage thyrotoxicosis.
Dr. Dirk Wm. Powell, ND
Dr. Dirk Wm. Powell, ND graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology in 1969, and from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine with Doctor of Naturopathy (N.D.), in 1976. Dr. Powell has been an adjunct professor at Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington since its inception in 1979 and has taught Endocrinology to fourth and fifth year naturopathic medical students from 1988 to the present.  Dr. Powell has written and published a textbook:  "Endocrinology and Naturopathic Therapeutics."  Dr. Powell has also directed a primary care practice with a special focus on endocrine disorders at the Easthill Clinic in Kent, Washington from 1977 to the present. He is an avid hiker and enjoys spending recreational time with mountain flora and fauna.
