ABOUT THIS SONG My intent with the whole Pure Love CD was to give each of the Earth elements a personal song through which to tell their story, to somehow sway the collective human indifference and abuse of them. It was a challenge to give character to the minerals, the air, the water, the animals, the birds. But I did it. This song about the minerals in the Earth needed to be a "heavy metal" song...not in that musical style, but in the sound, the feel, the key, the voices...it has a driving pulse that hints of deep Earth processes of creation. The minerals sing as a group. They call for conservation and time to replenish. The roll call of specific minerals in the bridge ends in the unexamined question, "when Earth is empty what'll you do?" to the humans who seem to be so oblivious to consequences. Erin and I took these songs out to schools in assemblies after I left teaching in the early 90's, and this one was always a hit with the kids singing along. I am a mineral, sleeping in the Earth... |
SONG LYRICS: I AM THE MINERAL
I am the mineral Sleeping in the earth In rock formations I had my birth I am a resource Use me wisely Before I run out Start recycling For millions and millions An millions of years Forces worked to get me here Trucks can mine me in one day Greed will make me fade away I am the mineral Sleeping in the earth In rock formations I had my birth I am a resource Use me wisely Before I run out Start recycling Bauxite, copper, diamond And gold Pull them out of a Great big hole Iron, lead, manganese, tin Earth supplies are growing thin Nickel, silver, cadmium, zinc People, people stop and think Uranium, cobalt, titanium, too When earth is empty What’ll you do, what’ll you do ©1994.
