Presentation Description:
As Naturopathic Doctors, we understand the importance of how diet and nutrients, organic produce, beneficial bacteria, decreasing chemicals and the overuse use of medications, safe water, gardening, and spending time in nature are the basis to how our gastrointestinal system, metabolism, immune and inflammatory systems function through our microbiome. We will begin with a discussion of the most current research in how these organisms are being disturbed by our modern society starting before birth and through the years and how that can cause increases in chronic disease allergies, obesity and autoimmune conditions.

Next, there will be a discussion on gastrointestinal conditions including post-infectious IBS, small intestinal bowel overgrowth, and inflammatory bowel disease, and the most relevant information in diagnostics, prevention and treatment of these conditions. The focus will be on the relationship to the microbiome and how external choices can be part of the cause of these conditions, as well as what treatments are being used to affect change in these microorganisms. Treatment options will include therapeutics diets (i.e. FODMAP, SCD, IBD-AID), herbal medicine, probiotic and prebiotic supplements, as well as the link to brain chemistry through the gut microbes.

Goals and Objectives:
  • Identify how environmental and lifestyle factors can cause changes in the microbiota and its effects on immune, inflammatory, and metabolic changes
  • Identify microbial relationship to common gastrointestinal conditions
  • Treatment of common GI conditions
  • Understand therapeutics related to microbiota based diets

Brief Biography:
Dr. Kim Bretz ND is a naturopathic doctor and founder of Fundamentals of Health, a multidisciplinary clinic in Waterloo, Ontario. Upon graduating from the University of Guelph in Biology, she entered the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM), graduating in 2001. She is a public speaker having presented to multiple corporations and agencies, and has been a guest lecturer for universities in the areas of health promotion, functional foods and the microbiome. She was also on the advisory board for Ferring Pharmaceuticals’ natural health care products. After consulting, teaching gastrointestinal physiology at the CCMH, lecturing, running continuing education programs for NDs, MDs, pharmacists and dieticians and working with patients for over 15 years in gut health and the microbiota, this area has become a passion for her (the kind where you read research articles while drying your hair because it’s fun).  From testing options and diagnostics, dietary programs, gut healing, nutrient replenishment, probiotics, and prebiotics she works with numerous areas of digestive health. She has worked with the Public Health Agency of Canada in a research study aiming to better understand antimicrobial resistance in Canada.
