Presentation Description:
In the last decade there has been increasing data to support a general principle in Naturopathic medicine that the root of disease is often in the gut.  The exponential increase in publications discussing the microbiome and how it relates to specific conditions helps us in multiple ways.  It helps us provide data to explain why we are treating the gut to address peripheral symptoms.  Information about the microbiome also helps us to communicate with other providers in the patient’s treatment team.  The goal of this presentation is to help people understand which specific conditions are best addressed by addressing the microbiome.  It will also address the use of medications for microbiome associated conditions.  We will review specific medications that disrupt the microbiome.  Finally, we will review a very basic process to reset the microbiome and discuss how to increase compliance with this program.  Approximately 30 min will be spent reviewing studies about the microbiome in general.  30 minutes will be spent on case studies.  30 minutes will be focused on assessment of specific conditions that can be managed with digestive treatment including chronic cystitis, sinusitis, autoimmune conditions, thyroiditis, SIBO, and more.  30 min will be spent on a basic template for a protocol and how to implement it.  2 blocks of time will be set aside for question and answers.  The majority of the presentation will be focused on practical applications of GI health in difficult to manage conditions.

Goals and Objectives
  • understand emerging research about gut health in order to better communicate with other providers and co-manage care in complex conditions
  • use appropriate medications for disruptions in the microbiome
  • recognize specific conditions that disrupt the microbioime including cystitis, sinusitis, autoimmune conditions, thyroiditis, SIBO, and more
  • identify medications, herbs, and other factors that disrupt the microbiome
  • Understand a clear and simple way to reset the microbiome
