Continuing Education Credits
2.5 hours of pharmacy CE credits for California Naturopathic Doctors

• Dr. Steve Parcell, ND

Originally presented: February 9, 2016

Course Overview
Myocardial infarctions and heart disease are still the number one cause of death in the United States so the standard of care remains substandard. Despite the widespread use of statin medications, heart attacks remain the number one cause of death in the United States. Lipid control with statin is estimated to reduce cardiovascular events by 40% at best. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are in a unique position to reduce cardiovascular events using an integrative approach to risk assessment and treatment. NDs are frequently asked by patients about alternatives to statins, cholesterol levels and the cause of heart attacks. Attendees will understand why conventional screening is inadequate and how cardiovascular imaging can be used to assess risk and monitor treatment. Imaging technologies such as carotid intima thickness and calcium scoring will be discussed in detail. New evidence for naturopathic interventions such as Berberine, Salvia officianalis, Resveratrol, Pomegranate, Red yeast Rice and Bergamot will also be discussed.

Attend this presentation to confidently:
  • Understand how to assess and reduce cardiac risk factors.
  • Understand how to interpret novel biomarkers to individualize care and discuss them with the patient.
  • Understand when to order heart scans and carotid studies and how to interpret and use them to improve outcomes and gain compliance with treatment.
  • Learn how to integrate naturopathic workup and treatment with conventional medicine.
  • Prescribe natural medicines such as Berberine, Salvia officianalis, Resveratrol, Pomegranate, Red yeast Rice and Bergamot for lipid control.
  • Understand risks and benefits of prescriptions for cholesterol and coronary artery disease.
