Originally Presented: November 2024

PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION:

Microbiome-forward assessments and therapies have had a place in naturopathic medicine’s unique armamentarium for over a hundred years. The vagina is home to the human body’s second largest reservoir of microbes, and it’s unique in many ways. This presentation will elucidate historical and current techniques for assessing and addressing the vaginal microbiome for many aspects of genitourinary health and fertility medicine. Assessments include microscopy, culture, 16SrRNA, and whole-genome sequencing. Treatments include lifestyle, diet, pharmaceuticals, botanicals, supplements, probiotics, and vaginal microbiota transplantation (VMT).

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

●      Compare the four main laboratory approaches to assess the vaginal microbiome

●      Apply evidence-informed microbiome-forward interventions to approach a variety of female genitourinary health conditions, including BV, yeast vaginitis, chronic UTIs, endometriosis, and

fertility & pregnancy.

●      Understand who is a candidate for vaginal microbiome transplantation (VMT), how to do VMT in clinic, and what patients VMT may be contraindicated for.
