Course Overview:
Evidence based research related to the efficacy of herbal based medicine for a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions will be presented, ranging from common conditions such as IBS, gastritis, and IBD to rare diseases such as autoimmune hepatitis. Research related to mechanisms of action and categories of herbs commonly used in the GI tract will be reviewed. Common myths about herbs and digestive problems will be discussed in light of current research studies.

  • Create more effective, evidence-based individualized botanical formulas for patients with IBS, peptic ulcers, autoimmune hepatitis, GERD, inflammatory bowel disease, microscopic colitis, and intestinal parasites.

  • Understand dosing and appropriately prescribe carminative, bitters, gut antimicrobial, secretolytic, spasmolytic and demulcent herbs.
Biography:
Eric Yarnell, ND, RH (AHG) graduated from Bastyr University (1996), after which he completed a two-year residency with master herbalist and physician Silena Heron, RN, ND in Sedona, AZ. Dr. Yarnell served as chair of the department of botanical medicine at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine where he also taught gastroenterology. He has served as senior and associate editor of the Journal of Naturopathic Medicine. He is currently chief medical officer at Northwest Naturopathic Urology. He is a founding member and current president of the Botanical Medicine Academy. Currently, Dr. Yarnell is associate professor in the botanical medicine department at Bastyr University and adjunct faculty at SCNM. He is also president of Heron Botanicals, Inc. an herbal pharmacy providing handcrafted, whole plant extracts exclusively to health care providers. Dr. Yarnell is author of numerous texts and articles including Natural Approach to Gastroenterology 2nd ed. He is co-author of Clinical Botanical Medicine 2nd ed and the A-Z Guide to Drug-Herb-Vitamin Interactions.
