Dr. Antonella Aguilera-Ruiz, ND

Originally Presented: July 2024

PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION:

Cardiovascular disease is the single greatest driver of Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) associated healthcare cost in North America. Yet, practitioners are poorly equipped to screen for ACEs, or provide education around the role of toxic stress physiology in their patients' disease process. This presentation will help fill that knowledge gap and make practitioners more confident in developing an effective trauma-sensitive treatment plan.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

  • Understand and analyze the connection between ACEs and adult health conditions.

  • Understand the role of toxic stress physiology in the development of cardiovascular disease.

  • Screen for ACEs and effectively communicate with patients about toxic stress and their health, using scripts and samples of presenting and framing screening.

  • Identify which patient demographics may incur additional risk for the development of CV disease in the context of ACEs and childhood adversity.

  • Recommend trauma-sensitive intervention, nutrition, supplements, and other lifestyle based treatments to support patients in a multi-faceted way.
